That's a lot of data and a lot of connect time until they upgrade the networks to more than 9600 baud ! How often are you doing it.

Why not transmit a 16 bit CRC with every 256 bytes of date or something like that, to allow fast recovery from errors, unless you want to implement TCP/IP and an FTP server type system ?
