I do not know your derivative, but if it does not have 4 pins for SPI, it is not "reversable on the fly". SILabs name the "direction control pin" in the f12x NSS but they are not exactly known for using "standard names".

Anyhow, I see a design where "which is the master" changes much more difficult to keep straight (not having small lurking bugs) than a system where the master is always the same. In both IIC and 485 there are techniques for master slave operations that makes all communication work with a "permanent" mmaster, why the ned for changing the master?
