Sounds like your keypad has a screened (or "shielded") cable; ie, the wires are surrounded by a foil or wire screen (or "shield") to keep out extraneous signals (ie, "noise") - as in the co-axial cable used for your TV aerial.

Steve is right: connect it to your system ground.
