1. Seems like I remember from an early issue of BYTE magazine, an article on Walsh functions used to synthesize analog waveforms.

2. Also, there was a series of papers in IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics describing the use of unique PWM to synthesize low noise, low distortion sine waves.
