If you are doing battery you MAY want the choose a loer frequency crystal. CPUs use less power at lower clock speed. This of coures balance against finishing faster an going back to sleep.

Use a switching regulator for Vcc ( Maxium has some designed for battery.
You did not say what kind of LCDs. 7 segment drivers and displays can last for weeks on a 9 Volt battery ( or AA's). I am sure about the 16*2 alphas and those like them.
