What is a hex keyboard? Is it a computer keyboard? My systems interface with a rudementary 4X4 keypad, which I assume is not what you mean.

But just in case look at the 74C922. This little baby can make your life a little easier if you are talking about a small 4X4 keypad. It requires an external interrupt and provides the keypress data.

Sorry if I'm way off.
