#112135 - inductive pickup Responding to: ???'s previous message |

How do you want to pick up the signal from the engine? Most motorbikes I work on get it from the low voltage side of the ignition coil, however, you can pick it up capacitively from the ignition lead by placing a wire close to it. Why not get a commercial tachometer, open it and see how they do it? Trying a timing light on our Landy at the weekend, I discovered it was "sparking erraticall", I removed the inductive pickup and discovered it was STILL "sparking erratically" - then I found the pickup worked anywhere within a foot of the engine.... The electronic ignition module though provides me with a nice 0-12V pulse every fire. Not actually sure WHEN a V8 fires a given cylinder though ? Once every two revs of the crank ? Steve |
