Thanks Andy.
I did a short calculation in Excel to check the BCD comparisons and it works. Initially i was more inclined on converting the date first to ISO standard (like YYYYMMDD) and then storing it in interger form and comparing but the packed-BCD approach is better and results in a shorter routine.
