I'll try to help anyway: For any problems with your LCD driver code, I suggest reading the data sheet. I haven't coded a LCD driver yet, only did use some existing sample code once on a PIC and it did work.

For converting a byte into two nybbles for output, there was a neat method posted here some days ago:
