I can not, in good conscience, go without extolling the virtues of the text processing tools available to us that could apply to dealing with auto-incrementing serialization in a purely textual manner as others have alluded to here (i.e., adding a HEX record). Of course this can be accomplished with a short AWK, Perl, etc. program.
