Yes I already did this. But please note that you need a rather large sine/triangle/etc. wave look-up table to avoid excessive noise in the generated signal. I get acceptable Signal/Noise ratio (>40 dB) with about 8 data samples peroutput period. Also, you can only do a software implementation for rather low output frequencies, due to the CPU's relatively slow speed. In my case I only needed 1400 Hz so not too taxing for a standard 8051.
