Practical Astronomy with a pocket calculator Peter Duffett-Smith Astronomical Algorithms Jean Meeus Both books are available from "Earth and sky books" here The books explain all you need to know to write your own timer code amongst other things - I have a nice Julian date calculator inside one of my projects written from the Smith book.
