Have you considered using mode 0 from your serial port? If your MCU is fast enough to get around the reload loop during transmit and the read loop in receive, then it does this for you. You'll probably have the same problem with the transmitter that I mentioned with respect to the '597, so you will probably want to use that series flipflop I mentioned.
