I`ve used similar configurations some times. As about MCU`s flash erase: you have been asked about reset circuit. AT89S8252 is very sensible for this matter. You may look at its errata and find some notes make you unhappy. For example, this one:

devices, inadvertent writes to either the Flash program memory

As about DataFlashTM so I have found not "erase" but "latch-up" problems when the chip cannot be anymore accessed till next power-off and then -on cycle.

Anyway the first step ypu should do is checking your hardware reset circuit and then try to eject all write/erase subroutines from the software; as it was already mentioned. Then report more details here.
