what mr eric said holds true in many cases..i developed a ISP for atmel`s 89sxx micros in past, the algorithm i used to extract hex file is such that the hex buffer will be only filled till the last used address, meaning that buffer will not show the remaining 0xff contents which remains after the last used location of code memory, soon i will be giving that isp in public domain...but problem is that its a visual basic based utility and final distribution package requires some 2 megabytes +...it will not be possible to upload that on forums like this due to space restrictions .
