you live in an ideal world, where everything makes perfectly sense. You'd be disappointed. Many of these pre-chewed "card systems" symply use a tag card, basically transmitting only a single number. No encryption, no mutual authentication, nothing special. A few seconds of googling gave me http://www.waferstar.com/products_show.asp?id=348 which says "EM or EM type card" It's not too much but I'd guess that means RFID cards from EM-Marin, that might provide a start point.
