I saw two of these signs hanging in a business selling wicker furniture and another sign hanging in an automotive repair shop. The signs could easily be read 1/2 block away (750 feet)

The "good design" you present can provode no more than 3mA (24mA/8) to any LED. If you can see such a sign 1/2 block away there must be an eagle in your ancestry (NOT an 'insult' as you like to take things but a reference to extremely sharp eyes)
