Couldn't you poll the RI flag?

In this particular application (it's for a communication protocol that has been in use for over 20 years, it's not my fault, I swear :) ) I need to detect the beginning of a transmission so I can send a reply before the reception is complete.

Other products using the same protocol indeed have Rx connected to INT0 and use an ISR to send the reply.
