the requirements re reliability are, actually quite simple
1) the data must be verified before programming is attempted
2) the chip you program must be programmed so that till the download is complte and verified it will not accept anything but programming
3) the most common bootloader problem (glitches when switching between boot and app) does not exist in these devices wher "to boot or not to boot" is determined by one bit.

In other words, if your code works (note "works", not "have been tested") the reliability is there..

one final comment: reading back the downlpoaded code after programming for verification is, in my opinion, the only true verification of a successful programming.
