For detection of call progress tones such as busy, remote ringing, and call pick-up, you need to monitor a frequency at around 400-425 Hz. I don't know if the MT8888 can do it. It is long time since I have used that chip. However, I am sure you can get some IC for this at either Mitel, sorry I forgot their new name, or mxcom.
