all I can say is that using EC2 and a 'real' (non-usb) multiport board (I have 10 com ports on my machine) it works seamlessly. Again, it is up to you if you will carry the cost of the serial expander board and the EC2s. All I know is that IT WORKS (with win-XP pro).
