I did a frequency counter project using AT89C2051 a while back. It has the software in hex and hardware schematics. This can be used as a RPM meter (tach) to suite your needs. Also search under Peter Dannegger (a real genius) because he has done the same thing only better. He published the c source code listing which means you can modify it to suit your needs.
