Sure the 8051 has some really useful bit-processing facilities, but only a (relatively) few of its data locations are bit-addressable.

The vast majority of the 8051's memory space is byte-addressable only.

As an 8-bit processor, it's pretty good at processing bytes!

Multi-byte values (especially forming floating-point numbers) are, of course, another matter...
