If the modem is setup for verbose messages is will say 'ring' when an incoming call is detected.

and it will say, "CONNECT" when the connection is established, and "NO CARRIER" when the call drops.

Or the corresponding numeric codes if you set it to Terse mode.

I would certainly recommend Terse mode for programatic control!
