1) Sorry, I didn't realize that Andy had already proposed the "cast" option.

2) I think that the automatic integer promotion of chars can be dangerous in some cases. Each programmer has his (or her) own preferences. I prefer that the compiler makes exactly what I request to do. I don't remember what the ANSI-C standard says about automatic promotion.
