Frame can refer to any number of structures. There's a frame in video, a frame rin telecom (T1 frame, T3 superframe, etc.), and it can be applied to nearly any recurring structure.

In your original query, you made no mention of the context, so eric, and perhaps rightly, assumed you meant some sort of as yet undefined structure in serial communication.
