Some years ago, I worked on a device that communicated serially between ground-referenced control logic and the stage of a scanning electron microscope that was referenced to 2 kV. We found that Burr-Brown (now owned by Texas Instruments) had a wide range of isolation couplers adequate for that task.

I'd recommend taking a look at their offering.
