You can (in fact, you SHOULD) connect the clock to an output of the microcontroller. Then, set the input data of the latch to the combination you want, and then toggle the clock line to produce the edge needed to clock in the data.
If you want to add a shift register, you will be better off if you use a pre-cooked combination of both, the 74xx595. JW |
