There is no shame on this. I see it as a good way of learning. Others might disagree, though - I don't care... :-)

Your description is roughly right, although in some details it's imprecise... For example, there is no need to rewrite the longjump instruction in the FLASH, in fact; there are 3 zeros written to the first 3 positions "manually" - no jump existed there previously, the whole sector was erased.

There is no such. All SFRs are located above 80h. Can you post here the disassembled lines which make you believe there is any register at that address?
