I aggree to you that it's easier and cheaper to buy off the shelf, but I'm not very experienced with PLD's, so to understand and learn more about it, I want to know exactly what happens throughout the programmer, also the fun by building is important here.

I have built various projects from scratch from easy to complex (incl. multilayer PCB's). I have built all my uP- and EPROM-programmers myself.
