Have you connected the GND to the display module correctly and verified the signal swing levels that come back from the LCD?
It sounds like you have a serious problem for when the T6963 tries to drive many low level bits back to the MCU. With a poor GND connection you may just have an issue that the GND at the module is pulling up to near the VIL level of your MCUs input pins and results in apparent garbage being read. This problem will be made to the worst condition when the display has to drive many attempted low levels back to the MCU. Also if you have arranged for there to be pullups on the LCD module data lines this problem with a poor GND would be made even worse due to the increased sink current involved when all eight outputs try to drive "0"s back to the MCU.
