Have you considered a small laser diode or other light source and a CCD?
By CCD, I'm referring to a linear array, as used in a FAX, not a the type used in cameras. They will offer better resolution than what you need, though the cheapest are at nearly the limit you've set. If you move a reflector such that it moves the beam on the CCD, you'll know how far you've moved. RE |
