I presume that you have appropriate pullups and wiring. You should be able to see some random pixels.

The display should work fine. I assume that the example code should work too.

Note that you will need to do some serious editing if you want to change the control pins. It is always wise to have this sort of configuration detail at the head of your source file. And to use symbols so that you can just alter the control pins in one place.
