I suggest the opposite way:
Start small and grow later.

Software developers are always memory gulping guys.
If you give 8kB, they ask for more und you must fight a big battle and lie "no more possible !"
Then after one month developing you can insert the 32kB Memory and all are happy.

But be sure, if you give 64kB on starting this was also fulfilled and you must change to bigger hardware.

So my assumption, anybody which starts with the T89C51RD2 (64kB) was furthermore absolute unable to fit a simple LED-flasher into the AT89C2051 (2kB).

Again:
Start small and grow later !
