Basically: In-System Programming (ISP) just means that you don't have to take the chip out of the "system" in order to program it; eg, by putting it into a special programmer. (aka In-Circuit Programming; ICP) In-Application Programming (IAP) further means that you don't have to stop the application in order to re-program the chip; ie, the system can do its own firmware updates.
