Kat, the problem with opto-isolated RS-485 is that due to the signal levels, you need the 485 driver AFTER the opto-isolators. I have done that once using power from the receiver (extra wires) but an all other cases I used the Maxim chip as it provides the isolated power supply on the other side of the isolation.
