Embedded system:

The processor, hardware and software inside a device (gizmo) that performs some specific task.


NOTE: An embedded system can be extremely complex and physically large. Usually it is rather small and cheap. I think the key thing about an embedded system is that it is just an internal element to a larger product/device with a somewhat limited purpose.
