There is a whole section in the FAQs clearly titled, "Serial Communications Questions", including one entry titled, "basic RS232 guide for 8052 users"

Also remember that, as far as the PC is concerned, the 8051 is irrelevant - a COM port is a COM port, irrespective of what's connected to it!
All the PC sees of a COM port is that it sends bytes to it, and receives bytes from it - the PC neither knows nor cares where the sent bytes go to, nor where the received bytes came from.
