With ultrasonic sound, you can have a speaker + microphone in the roof. Send out a sound ping, just like the dolphins or bats. Count the time until the microphone picks up the reflection. The earliest reflection is from the object closest.
Not really sure about a good way to use infrared light, besides moving a beam physically down until it gets broken. If one wall has a mirror, then you can have transmitter and receiver on the same side and let them slide up and down while checking for the reflection in the mirror. |
