Much has been suggested, let me state my opinion:

UNLESS YOU MAKE CHEAP TOYS:

1) A supervisor circuit is mandatory.
2) Get a uC with an internal watchdog
3) If a derivative meeting your requirements and 2) is not available, use a supervisor with the watchdog included such as TC1232 (yes, its from Microchip)
