If you take a look on my website there is a schematic of an 89S53 with a header for use with a serial programmer. It works with the Equinox in system serial programmer, which is fairly cheap to buy.

Don't know if you can incorporate this into your system, but if you can, it is an economical and convenient way to program the processor.
