From ur explaination what i understand is that u have a master controller which interact with several slaves to collect the CODEC data.

In ur case the communication is between a Master and any one of the slave and NOT between slaves!!!(I am not sure whether this is the case).If this is the case i think we should call this as Multiprocessor communication not a tree structure.

The tree structure is one where all the controller will be master at some time and slave at other time!
if it has to fit ur case what i mean is that several slaves in ur design should also communicate with each other(acting as master) when ur master will be slave at that time!then only we shall call it as tree structure!
