#20523 - RE: Which ICE is better? |
The best ICE is a relative matter.
You can spend through the nose (e.g. Nohau) and get something that will do things like 250k trace or you can spend a more modest sum (e.g. Ceibo) and get the basic multiple breakpoints etc. I have yet to find justification for spending more than the $1500 I spend for Ceibo, I have worked in big places with the expensive stuff and I would say that the extra features costing many thousands more probably saved me about 20 hours per year. One consideration is that the lower cost ICEs do steal the top of the memory they come with READ THE SPEC, Ceibo steal 1k of the 64k emulation memory it is equipped with, not a big concen - another, I do not remember which only leave you 48k. Another issue is that if you plan to use banking, you will need the big mommas, however, in my personal opinion, if you need banking you should use another processor. One advantage of the cheaper ICEs is that they do not use bondout chips, so if you change your derivative, you just pop another chip in, for the expensive versions you need to spend a thousand or two for another probe. Again, I am happy with my 3 Ceibos (useful to have more than one when you do multiple processor setups) and do not see a justification for spending more. BEWARE: some of the lower cost emulators can not handle 6clock/20 or 12clock/40Mhz. If you managed to read all this, congratulations, Erik |
