The problem with battery backup for internal ram is that you have to back up the whole processor. You need to go into power down/sleep mode during no power occurances. Battery or supercap is a decision based on the maximum power down period. If you want to protect against power outages for an 'always on' system, I would go with the supercap. If you expect the user to switch the system off for periods of time, a battery is the solution.
