This chip is not a true "MODEM". It is only a modulator, i.e. it can generate modem tones, but can't demodulate (receive) data from other modems. You can have only one way communication.

You have not mentioned your application, so I really can't suggest a chip. Please have a look at TDK website, or MX-COM
