I couldn't find anything in my data sheets to say you couldn't do this. Then I tried it with my emulator but it didn't work.

I suspect that the alternate pin function T2EX is disabled when you use the pin for output, that is when you try to set P1.1 to 0 to force the T2 capture.

You might get away with it if you wrapped another port pin around via an external wire...
