That clears things up a bit for me. I am working on an existing piece of equipment, which had no way of hardware tying the addresses to the common code area.

I read the service docs for the machine more closely and it says specifically that the common code must be copied by hand to all banks in the EEPROM. hmm... makes development/debugging a bit more trouble.
