#24115 - FYI: OSD Chips |
Some time back I found that the STV5730 OSD chip was being discontinued. This is a neat part that fairly easily allows you to send your output to a TV screen instead of a LCD display. I have heard rumors that ST is rethinking their discontinuance, but have not confirmed this.
In the meantime I've found another chip, Mitsubishi's M35062. I've just got our prototype running. It does some things nicer than the STV5730, for example smooth scrolling and more characters on the screen. But where the ST part had a serial interface, the M part is parallel, 8 bits data plus 2 control lines. By far the worst part of the M part is the data sheet. You know how we're always saying read the data sheet to find the answer? It doesn't help here! I'm not convinced that the folks at Mitsubishi that have to support this part know how to use it, their answers to my questions haven't been terribly helpful. There are a couple variations of this part, M35060, M35061... different character sets mostly. The datasheet is available at http://www.mitsubishichips.com/data/data...e35062.pdf Dennis |
