Maybe I am being pedantic, but "machine language" IS NOT assembler, if you like, its the contents of the program ROM. You can write programs IN "ROM code", which is machine language, assembler is the lowest high level thing above just entering raw numbers. I have written in M.L, when I couldn't afford an assembler. Working out jumps and branches was absolutely mind boggling.
