American English predates current English English, so it has precendence. Witness: Analog v. Analogue Program v. Programme color v. Colour. For some reason, English English adopted a French spelling in the 18th Century that the colonials didn't adopt. There are other archaisms in American grammar. Gotten v. Have got. Faucet v. Tap.
